Watts Valve Helps Municipal Water System Minimize Surge Events

What the Customer Needed

A municipal water system was operating a non-surge control valve on one of its water wells and needed a more effective solution to improve system protection and long-term reliability. A primary concern was the risk of water hammer and hydraulic surges caused by sudden pump shutdowns, whether from power outages, routine operations, or emergency events. These conditions can create rapid flow reversal and damaging pressure spikes throughout the distribution system, increasing maintenance demands and putting critical infrastructure at risk. The customer required a dependable solution that could protect the well system while reducing the impact of surge events on the pipeline.

Solution

After evaluating the application requirements, a Watts LFM118-4 non-surge check valve was installed on the pump discharge line to address reverse flow and surge-related issues. Designed to prevent reverse flow while minimizing hydraulic shock, the valve features adjustable slow-opening and slow-closing operation. It opens when upstream pressure exceeds downstream pressure and closes gradually as flow reversal begins, helping to significantly reduce pressure surges associated with pump shutdowns.

Results

The installation improved system protection by preventing reverse flow and reducing the effects of water hammer within the pipeline. With controlled opening and closing rates, the solution minimizes hydraulic shock, improves overall system reliability, and helps extend the service life of critical infrastructure. The result is a dependable, long-term solution that enhances operational performance while reducing the risk of damage and ongoing maintenance challenges associated with surge events.
